[Mill Creek Sewer collapse, 5000 block of Funston St. Used in 1961 PWD Annual Report, p. 33] Mill Creek Sewer at Funston Street - Emergency Contract No. E-5215. The failure of a section of the brick arch of the Mill Creek sewer at the north side of Funston Street on the night of July 17th caused instant total damage to four properties, the loss of life of two persons [sic: three people died] and eventually, the demolition of four additional properties considered unsafe. The emergency contract was entered into to aid in the search for trapped survivors, recover the bodies of those killed and complete demolition of those homes condemned by City engineers. The sewer was cleaned of debris and sheathing placed around the void, then a fence was constructed around the area. Photograph No. 48897-27 shows a general view of the disaster area. Photograph No. 48897-41 shows debris clogged sewer at area of collapse. Photograph No. 48897-54 shows emergency sheathing and shoring at area of collapse. |
